Black, Mulatto and Allied Families of Centre County Pennsylvania
The records for these families have been extracted from the US federal Census, and Court records between 1790-1830. In 1850 the census began to list all individuals in a household not just the head of household. Adding local cemetery records, newspaper articles, oral traditions, land records, military records, and previous family histories gave insight into the people of those families. Centre County Genealogical Society printed much of the family information in Volume 28, No. 4 Winter 2003/4. We continue to collect the information, and update the material and make it available in some format annually.
Centre
County was established February 13, 1800 from parts of Northumberland,
Mifflin, Huntingdon, and Mifflin Counties. When established in 1795 Lycoming
County included parts of Centre County. Centre County records might be found
in any of these counties for the period before 1800. Northumberland County was
organized in 1772. Mifflin County was established in 1786 and included
portions of what is now Centre County, specifically the parts of the county
west of Spring Mills. In 1786 Bald Eagle Township named for a Munsee chief
Woapalanne also known as Bald Eagle, was split into three parts Upper Bald
Eagle, Lower Bald Eagle, and Nippenose. In
1787 Huntingdon County was formed, when Centre County was established parts of
Franklin township were included. In 1789 Mifflin County was established and
parts of Potter Township are included in Mifflin County.
Linn's
History of Centre and Clinton Counties Pennsylvania list a chart on page 31.
The chart tells us that there were 89 colored and 1 slave in 1800. The
population for the area was 4112. A line by line of the Federal census yields
the following information below. A summation is that there are 87 colored and
6 slaves. One of the colored is a free black head of household, there are no
whites listed in his household.

Records
These are slaves registered after the abolition law. Most of these registrations of slaves take place 30 years after the abolition law. This appears to mean that any child born to any slave before the slave is 28 is a slave. For this reason there were children and grandchildren of slaves born after the abolition law still in slavery in Centre County Pennsylvania.
