This family line for
Richard and Charity is much more extensive than the short reference Edna Green
Medford makes in Slavery at the home of George Washington. More extensive
research is needed to confirm that the older children used the name Jasper. The
line has been comprised from census records. It can be determined from census
records that these are the descendants of Dick and Charity of Dogue Run.
The names for this
individual vary from census to census but it is one person. The age is also
variable. The older Dick becomes the older he is. At the time of his death his
age is exaggerated by about 10 years if we go from Washington's Inventory.
The obvious problem
using the dates on the inventory is that Charity is older than she is on the
census. We have to accept that the ages have been recorded with some variation.
There is about ten years in either direction Ten years older for Dick and
Charity must be about ten years younger.
In the 1810 census we
find the family as tic marks in Fairfax County. There is one more child than
recorded in 1799 inventory. The 1810 census lists 6 free Negro.
In the 1830 census the
name is a guess at best it appears to Hanilop. There are 8 Free Negro in the
1830 census. The dates provided are the correct dates for the family.
The age or year of
birth changes by the 1860 census Richard is 116 years old.
