As always addition, corrections are welcome. The Jack Carter family on this page is found in Fairfax County Virginia.
There is much work done on two other African American Carter families in Virginia. Paul Carter born about 1620 and enslaved by Nathaniel Littleton of Northampton Virginia can be found in the work of Paul Heinegg. There are records of Robert Carter III emancipating his enslaved some of whom used the last name Burke. The Robert Carter III family is described as from Tradewater Virginia in a book by Andrew Levy.

JACK2
CARTER
(WASHINGTON'S1
ENSLAVED)
was born 1759 in Dogue Run Mt Vernon Virginia.
He married GRACE.
She was born 1764 in Dogue Run Mt Vernon Virginia.
Notes for JACK
CARTER:
Jack Carter is George
Washington’s; Grace and the children are dower.
In 1810 Landon Carter
has 19 slaves. The M F Carter estate has 34 slaves. W Carter has 1 slave.
In 1820 there is a
Robert Carter free Negro. It is possible that Robert and Roger are the same
person. Robert is in a separate area of Fairfax County from William Carter.
William Carter is in Turro Parrish and now appears to have the Estate slaves. He
has 31 slaves.
In 1830 Robert Carter
is a free Negro Fairfax County. Robert and Roger are most likely the same
individual. Robert Carter is again enumerated in a separate part of the county
from William Carter. Robert Carter in 1830 is next door to William Lee free
Negro. Robert Carter has 11 free Negro in the household. William Lee has only 2
young children free the rest of the household is enslaved. William F Carter
continues to have more than 30 slaves.
In 1840 we find a James
Carter free Negro family Fairfax County Virginia on the same page as West Ford.
Lucinda and Thomas Carter are found not William F Carter. We assume that
Robert/Roger may have passed away and the family is assimilated into the home of
another free black family.
In 1850 there are 41
individuals with the surname Carter in Fairfax County.
Thomas Carter age 72
first appears in the 1850 census next door to Thomas Custis. This appears to be
Thomas from Mrs. French's. Jack Carter and Grace did not have a son Thomas.
Joe Carter first
appears in the 1850 census. He is the correct age to be Joe son of Rose at the
Riverview Farm. Rose was enslaved to George Washington. Alfred Carter appears by
himself as a servant for the Horseman family in 1850. With Alfred in 1850 is
Perry Quander born 1820. The Quander's are next door to Joseph Carter's home in
1850. That is the reasoning for placing Alfred in this family.
Joe Carter Jr. first
appears in the 1850 census. He is enumerated as Boatman and at home with his
parents. He is enumerated twice in the 1850 census.
Keziah appears in the
1850 Fairfax County Census. Keziah Carter is seen for the first time in 1850
census. We know she was counted as a hash mark unnamed earlier. Because of her
age and the fact that Robert is missing we assumptively place Keziah as the wife
of Robert Carter. With Keziah are Gusty Carter and family. Also found with
Keziah are two Dorsey children one given name looks like Sean or Liam the other
looks like America Dorsey.
Elizabeth and George
Carter are found in 1850 in the household of Eli Oliver as farm labor. Elizabeth
is mulatto and George is Black. They are assumptively placed here as children of
George by another woman not named. The reasoning is name similarity and age.
George, Eugenia his
wife and Harriet are all found together in the 1850 census Fairfax County.
Mary Carter spouse
unknown is found living next-door to the surgeon and the dentist in 1850 with
children Martha Jane and John. All are listed as mulatto. They are only one
household away from Alfred Carter also mulatto who was found on the farm of the
family Horseman with Levi Quander. Mary is assumptively placed as the wife of
Alfred for this reason. The child John is an infant.
John Carter is found on
the 1850 census as farm labor to the family surname Reid Fairfax County
Virginia.

ROBERT3
CARTER
(JACK2,
WASHINGTON'S1
ENSLAVED)
was born 1789 in Dogue Run Mt Vernon Virginia, and died 1825 in Fairfax County
Virginia. He married KEZIAH
CARTER.
She was born 1785 in Fairfax County Virginia.
Notes for ROGER
ROBERT
CARTER:
In the census there was
no record for Roger Carter. It is assumptive that Carter was taken as a surname
since his father was "Carter Jack". There is in the 1830 census a
Robert Carter. I have not seen the original from 1799 but feel that it is a good
possibility that Roger and Robert are the same person with a wrong
interpretation somewhere. Roger is dower. Grace his mother is dower. His father
Jack Carter is George Washington's.
In 1820 there is a
Robert Carter free Negro in Fairfax County. It is assumptive that Roger and
Robert are the same person. Within the household are 2 males and 2 females above
45 the age is a little high but is most likely estimated.
By 1830 there are three
males age 10-24. The assumption made is that Robert Carter born at Dogue Run has
passed away about 1825. The three males are Robert George and Gusty. There are
two males under 10 John and Cyrus D. Two females under 10 Christiand and Lolly
or Sally. One female 10-24 Unidentified. Keziah one female 25-54.
