Moore Family of Shropshire, West River, and Philadelphia

Mordecai Moore of West River Maryland was born 28th day of the 4th month of 1663 the son of Richard and Sarah Williams Moore, and this is recorded in the records of Shropshire U.K. At the age of about 11 Mordecai was apprenticed to Dr Thomas Wynne of Caerwys Wales also found in meeting records. His apprenticeship was completed in 1687. He married first Ursula ...... Burgess who was the widow of Colonel William Burgess. He married secondly Deborah Lloyd the daughter of Governor Thomas Lloyd.

Other children of Richard (buried 15th day 11th month 1668) and Sarah Moore are Richard born 14th day 9th month 1664. Esther born 9th day 3rd month 1666, died 13th day 4th month 1667. Sarah born 27th day 11th month 1667. There is a burial record which seems to indicate that Sarah wife of Richard died as a complication of childbirth about the same time as the birth of daughter Sarah.

In the writings of Dr. Thomas Wynne we find reference that Dr. Hollins, Dr. Needham, and Dr. Moore were the men who administered his test in surgery. Dr. Richard Moore was the teacher of Dr. Thomas Wynne and Dr. Thomas Wynne was in return the teacher of his son Dr. Mordecai Moore.

The step children John, Ann, and Richard of David Meredith by his wife Catherine ...... Moore Meredith are supposed to be the children of Richard Moore. We could suppose that the deceased husband of Catherine is the brother of Mordecai Moore, Richard born 14th day 9th month 1664.

Another connection between the families of Moore and Meredith is that a David Meredith and a Richard Moore had been fined together in 1659. In an article in Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine which is often quoted for births of the Moore stepchildren, the author L.D. Cook submits a second article with corrections excluding the birth dates of these children. The original article had indeed blended John Moore son of James and John Moore son of Richard into one individual.

Future work is needed to uncover records in Wales and Shropshire, because excluding the birth dates would still calculate the birth of the three children who arrive with Meredith and are mentioned in Radnorshire meeting records as 1679, placing Richard brother of Mordecai's age at about 15. The conclusion is that there must be a third Richard Moore who's burial has yet to be documented or that Katherine ..... Moore Meredith was married to someone by a different given name.

There is a birth and death record for the same day the birth of a son Richard to Richard and Sarah Williams Moore is noted for Richard Moore 14th day 9th month 1664 on Ancestry.com a burial record is found for the same day at Barker Street with the Shropshire England Parrish and probate records. There is a separate burial noted for a Richard Moore son of Richard Moore in Millington's Garden 24th day 9th month 1664.

Mordecai Moore is present at the wedding of Sydney Wynne to William Chew. It is noted here that it is supposed that the two daughters of Thomas Wynne Sydney and Rebecca, who attend meeting in Maryland were in some way wards of Dr. Mordecai Moore. Mordecai Moore was the teacher for his step son Dr. Charles Burgess. Mordecai Moore's household at West River included Ursula's children and step children, his son Richard by Ursula and his children by Deborah Lloyd, and it is assumed at times the children of Dr. Thomas Wynne.
